Linda Shields, Active Stirling’s Volunteer Walk Leader wins Dementia Friendly Walk Leader of the Year Award at the Paths for All Volunteer Awards 2018 held Thursday 20 September at the Scottish Parliament.

Active Stirling were there to celebrate Scotland’s Walking Champions and our very own Local Walking Champion – Linda Shields. Linda is one of Active Stirling’s Walk Volunteers who leads three dementia friendly walks a week. Her commitment and willingness to go above and beyond her role has resulted in many more people living with dementia across Stirling accessing, safe and enjoyable walks. Linda was successful in wining this year’s Dementia Friendly Walk Leader of the Year Award, receiving her award from Joe Fitzpatrick – Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing.

Linda was very deserving of this award, reflecting how she leads walks in a way that everyone feels welcomed and supported. She has a great ability of putting people at ease, reassuring those with dementia and their carers. Alongside leading walks Linda continues to promote these walks across Stirling, including encouraging 4 care homes to get involved. Linda is a true Dementia Friendly Walking Champion.

"We are very fortunate to have a great team of Walk Volunteers across Stirling and it is brilliant when they get recognition. Without them accessible walking opportunities would simply not exist. We are delighted for Linda who is a very valued member of our volunteer walk leading team. Her caring and considerate nature has made a difference to so many; with many referring to Linda as their lifeline. Every congratulations go to Linda on winning this award." Jude Deacons, Active Stirling’s Community Activation Manager.
